Truth Mirror and causation
Live teams drown in events and still argue about why. Dashboards show what moved. They rarely show causation — or whether “healthy” means the same for a whale, a social connector, and a resilient free player.
Truth Mirror is how we make that argument legible. AFITMRR™ is the principle set. Shared language keeps product, live ops, and analytics on the same objects. Causation is the discipline of not fooling yourself with correlations.
The problem with flat metrics
- High Frequency with low Intensity may mean habit, not love.
- High Monetary with low Resilience is a silent churn bomb.
- High Referral with weak Tenure may mean invite spam, not community.
Player service and business value stay aligned only when you see which kind of value you create — and which you burn.
AFITMRR™: seven lenses
| Letter | Principle | Question |
|---|---|---|
| A | Attention | Do they show up and focus? |
| F | Frequency | How often do they return? |
| I | Intensity | How deep is a session? |
| T | Tenure | How long have they been with you? |
| M | Monetary | Do they fund the product fairly? |
| R | Referral | Do they bring others? |
| R | Resilience | Do they recover after friction? |
Every important live event should map to one or more principles — or it is noise. Primer: AFITMRR™.
From events to health
- Profile the event stream.
- Map events → AFITMRR™ principles.
- Define metrics under each principle.
- Weight for genre and stage.
- Score cohorts, not only totals.
- Intervene on the weakest principle that still moves retention or revenue.
Shared language
You do not need a philosophy seminar. You need named concepts, explicit links (event → metric → principle → decision), and versioning when the live game changes meaning.
Causation without the theatre
1. Causal chain, not single KPI
Prefer event → behaviour → principle → outcome over “revenue up, so the event was good.”
2. Counterfactual questions
If this event never fired, which principle weakens? If none, stop building it.
3. Cohort and sequence
Order often matters more than averages.
4. Intervention tests
Change one surface; hold the principle map fixed; read which principles move.
5. Resilience and lag
Many wins show Monetary today and Resilience damage later. Track lag on purpose.
Games for generations. Worked by the minute.
Long-lived titles aren’t off-the-shelf experiences — they live in player minutes. A healthy free loop is player service; Monetary and Referral fund the next year of that service. The more attention you put into each minute of the service, the more minutes of attention players give back.
